K-8 Grade Placement
Policy
(Please note, this is for grade K-8
students only. For grades 9-12, go to
High School Grade Placement Policy
Policy
For K-8 students, at the time of
enrollment, the grade level is written on the student agreement. The level can
be determined by the legal need to be 5 by December 2nd for Kindergarten, and
proceeding up each grade from there. For Grade Placement, refer to the linked chart.
Placement
Students can be placed "at grade
level" or below grade level at teacher/parent discretion, but never above
grade level. If a parent requests for a student to be enrolled 2 grade levels
or more below where they should fall by their age, contact your ES Advisor for
approval prior to submitting the Student Agreement. A student can work in
curriculum at higher grade levels that match their ability, but the grade level
in our records must not go above the level determined by their age.
Retention
If a teacher/parent
decide that a student should repeat a grade level consult your advisor.
This can then be done by submitting the Fall Student Agreement with the desired
grade level, and following up by the first day of school by checking their
student list to see if the proper grade level is listed for that student.
Again, if this will place the student 2 grade levels or more below where they
should fall by their age, contact your ES Advisor for approval prior to
submitting the Student Agreement.
Kindergarten
Retention
The state is not favorable
toward retaining Kindergartners. If you
feel there is a strong need to retain a Kindergartner, please talk to your
advisor. Once you have advisor approval,
then have the parent sign this form
linked to the CDE (California Department of Education) website and mail it to
the IEM office in Placerville Attn: Student Records. It is an auditable
document. They can only repeat Kindergarten once.
