Writing Assignment Information
Individualize per parent and for the
school year’s specific type of writing assignment and links to the current
information.
Dear (Families),
As many of you
experienced last year, we are continuing with the tradition of having a
school-wide writing assessment. All students may participate, but 2nd to
11th graders and 12th graders who have not yet passed CAHSEE ELA are required
to participate. We hope to improve everyone's writing skills through this
process. If you have a student below 2nd grade, they are
welcome to participate, and we are happy to provide gentle feedback and goals
for next year.
The focus for this year’s writing assessment is (state). (sample paragraph of what this type of
writing is--You need to be able to summarize before you can be successful at
most other kinds of writing that you will be required to do in college. It is
probably the most important writing skill a college student can have. It is
also an important skill during note-taking.)
Below you
will find the link that will provide tools for getting started, along with the
actual grade-level prompts that you will use. Please take
a look at these links carefully, and when you and your student
are ready, go ahead and have them complete this required writing assessment.
If you have any concerns or questions, most of them are
addressed in the link below. Be sure to take time to look at all
the links, and find what is pertinent to your student to ensure ease and
success in writing. If you need me to print anything from this link for
you, just let me know and I will bring it to our next learning record meeting.
Try to get started on this soon to avoid last minute writings.

I would like to collect these writing pieces by our (November/December) learning
record meeting or sooner to ensure we get them in time for grading. I
will need the prompt attached to the writing piece, and please use
college-ruled binder paper, or primary writing paper for the younger
students. I am happy to proctor this writing assignment for you
should you feel uncomfortable with the process, or I can provide extra
assistance where needed.
Please email me back to let me know that you received this and are
clear on the expectations.
I look forward to reading your child’s writing!!
Best Wishes,
(School name) ES
