Report Card FAQs
I
have an 8th grader taking Algebra 1 and wants HS credits. What do I do?
If an 8th grade student is taking high
school courses, in order to get HS credit they must take a minimum of 2 HS
courses and at least 1 of these 2 (or more) need to be in a core subject
area. The remaining HS courses can indeed be in life skills (PE or
computer for ex.) or special interest. As long as they are meeting the
standards requirement for these HS courses then this is allowed.
My
8th grader is taking all high school courses. What report cards do I do?
If an 8th grade student is taking ALL
high school courses in 8th grade you only need to fill out the HS
report card (you do not need to fill out the K8 report card
additionally). If a student is though for example only taking 3 HS
courses then the remaining two would be K8 growth area courses and you then
would need to fill out two report card to reflect both
of these.
My
student took part of Algebra 1 in 8th grade, but didn’t complete the
course. What do I mark for that ?
If an 8th grade student is taking
algebra you will ONLY check the box that says algebra requirement met AFTER
they have completed one full year of this prior to 9th grade. If
the student started to take algebra in the 2nd semester you would
not check algebra requirement met since they did not complete the full course
of algebra before 9th grade. In this example then they would
need to take it again starting in 9th grade for the full 10 credits
to meet the requirement. If the student though took another HS course
with algebra in the 2nd semester then they would get the credit but
you still would not check the algebra requirement met since they would only
have completed ½ of the algebra requirement. So in this example it might
look like 5 credits for algebra and 5 credits in French that they completed in
their 2nd semester of 8th grade.
How
do I know whether or not to use the a-g course name for an a-g
course?
Here are the choices:
·
If
the student is taking an a-g course through our school
(with a SME if needed) and following our school approved a-g course requirements,
then you will choose the a-g course name in our drop down box. You will
NOT choose from the two far right hand side columns (a-g type and a-g detail as
these are only to be used if the student is taking the a-g course online or
through a college).
·
If the student is taking an online course or
college course for a-g then you will NOT choose an a-g
course title name from our school but rather choose the regular course
name.
o
If
the student is taking an online course then for the column that says a-g type
you will choose “Online Course” and then in the next column choose the online
course name from the drop down list of approved online courses.
o
If the student is taking a college a-g course
then again you will only choose the course title name (no a-g in the course
title) and then in the a-g type you will choose “College Course” and then in
the last column of a-g Detail you must enter the college course # for that UC/CSU
course as listed in their catalog or on the student’s report card.
My
student is not wanting high school credit for Algebra
1, so how do I note that it is completed?
Be sure that you make the HS report card in the 1st
sem. for that one algebra course, even though high school credits are not going
to be awarded. (You will never mark this HS line “ready”). Make sure that
you also list the NCLB code within this entry to show that it is being
supervised by an appropriate Highly Qualified Teacher. If the student
completes the requirement (Full year of algebra 1 ending at the end of 2nd
sem) then on the K8 report
card 2nd sem. you will check the box that the “algebra requirement
has been met”. Do not check this box for the 1st sem., though,
because they will not have completed the requirement yet, and a full year must
be completed prior to entering high school for this to be checked.
