Printing FAQ

Q. Help! What do I do? When I click PRINT in webfiles, and it shows the printing preview window, it automatically chooses a printer I do not have. What is going on? I have to click on my own printer each time I want to print.

A. Make sure that the printer you want to use is selected as your default printer, then restart your entire computer and try again.

Q. I have talked to my advisor and turned my computer on and off, and gone in and out of File Maker repeatedly.  I am not able to print from my printer.

A. Check to make sure that your preferred printer is selected as your default printer. Here are the directions to do that for Windows XP.

To Specify your Default Printer

The default printer is used when you click Print on the File menu of many Windows-based programs.

  1. Open Printers and Faxes.
  2. Right-click the printer you want to use as the default printer, and then click Set as Default Printer.

A check mark appears next to the printer icon in Printers and Faxes.

Q. Which printers work with Citrix?

A. Hewlett Packard seems to support printing through Citrix better than other manufacturer. Here is a list of printers that have been tested by HP for Citrix use.

HP LaserJet 4200, HP LaserJet 4600, HP Business Inkjet 1100, HP Business Inkjet 2300, HP DesignJet 4000, HP Deskjet 5650, HP Deskjet 5740, HP Deskjet 6122, HP Deskjet 6540

Here is a link to a document about that testing.

Q. I can’t print from Citrix.  HELP!

A. Here is my suggestion to try for those having intractable mysterious printing problems.

For a PC: Download and install PrimoPDF (http://www.primopdf.com/ ).

Set it as your default printer. It will then show up as a printer in the printer settings. “Print” each document as a PDF file. Then open the pdf documents and print them by manually selecting the printer you wish the output to go to. This has the added advantage of creating files that are portable, i.e. can be emailed as a pdf file instead of being printed. And they can be saved on your computer for future reference.

For a MAC: Every time a print dialog comes up on a Mac, there is an option to Save As PDF. Just select that option. Then open the pdf documents and print them by manually selecting the printer you wish the output to go to. This has the added advantage of creating files that are portable, i.e. can be emailed as a pdf file instead of being printed. And they can be saved on your computer for future reference.
